El italiano.

Tiramisú

Veneto's espresso-soaked, mascarpone-clouded modern classic — the name means 'pick me up'.

Etymology

tiramisùtee-rah-mee-SOO

Venetian tirame sù — 'pull me up, cheer me up'

The only dessert that is literally an instruction to feel better.

The youngest legend in the case

Tiramisú is barely fifty years old — born in the trattorias of Treviso in the 1970s and conquering the planet in a single generation. The name is an instruction: tirami sù, pick me up.

Espresso, mascarpone, cocoa, and patience. Our family came to the Río de la Plata partly from Italy — this one is blood, not borrowing.

By the portion, or whole for a crowd.

Asked at the counter

Is tiramisù really Italian?

Very — and very young: born in the trattorias of Treviso in the 1970s, world-famous within a generation. Our family's Italian blood takes it personally.

Can I order a whole tiramisù?

Yes — whole formats for gatherings with 48 hours' notice, up to party size.
